Abstract

1384208 Tow cutter MONSANTO CO 4 June 1973 [5 June 1972] 26548/73 Heading D1F Tow is stapled by laying it from end to end on a rotating drum in a zig-zag path, and cutting the laid tow by cutters extending into annular drum grooves. Tow is laid, Fig. 3, about pins 20, 21 projecting radially from rotating drum 12, and cut by rotating cutter discs 39 each extending into an annular drum groove. Running elastic belts 31 hold the tow against the drum. The tow runs through and is laid by Z-shaped tube 44, Fig. 2, rotating about an axis of one of its end tubes, which axis intersects the rotation axis of drum 12. Tube end 64 rotates in a plane tangential to the drum. Rubber-surfaced idler rollers may replace the belts, and a pivoting tube oscillated in a horizontal plan may replace the rotary tube. The drum may be formed by annular discs separated by smaller-diameter spacers, the spacers being selected and the space between the cutters being adjustable to give the required tow length.
