Abstract
1384061 Moulding laminated polyurethane articles IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 June 1972 [18 June 1971] 28768/71 Heading B5A Laminated polyurethane articles are made by injecting a first charge of polyurethane reaction mixture into a mould to fill the mould (by allowing it to expand if a foaming agent is used), letting the first charge harden and then injecting a second charge into the mould whilst permitting the volume of the mould cavity to be increased by the pressure of injection to accommodate the second charge. A vertical flash mould, Fig. 1, comprising an hydraulically operated plunger 3 and a mould shell 2 has two mixing chambers 4, 5 supplied with polyisocyanate through inlets 7 and 10 and with polyol through inlets 6 and 11. Foaming agent is incorporated into the polyol supplied to the first charge in chamber 4, and after injection a plunger 8 is moved until its face 9 lies flush with the mould surface to completely empty chamber 4 and close the inlets 6 and 7. A second charge is injected through chamber 5. To enable a singleinjection nozzle to be used the two charges may be identical and contain foaming agent, a higher injection pressure being used for the second injection to present foaming and also to displace the mould plunger against its hydraulic pressure. Examples of polyurethane reaction mixtures and curing conditions for producing a rigid layer supporting a rigid foam for refrigerator housings or a flexible foam for car trims are given.
