Abstract
1384060 Carbon-filled polyamide articles POLYPENCO Ltd 26 Oct 1972 [27 Oct 1971 (3)] 49820/71 49822/71 and 49823/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] At least 3 wt. per cent of carbon fibres, at least 90% of which have a length below # in. and at least 70% have a length of 10 to 40 thousandths of an inch are mixed with a lactam prior to polymerization to form a solid article. The fibres may be chopped to the required length before or after incorporation with the lactam which may also contain a thixotropic agent, e.g. SiO 2 . Specified lactams are capro- and lauric lactams. The carbon fibres may be obtained by heat treatment of polyacrylonitrile and should be dried. Polymerization may be effected by heat and/or catalyst and initiator, all the examples illustrate anionic processes. Moulded article.-Articles which may be cast from the polymerizing mix include tubes, gears and propellers. Various techniques are described for controlling the distribution and orientation of the fibres in the article, e.g. so that there is a greater concentration of fibres on one side or on the periphery of the article or so that 90% of the fibres have an alignment within 5 degrees of a given axis. Such techniques include centrifugal casting, flow along a straight or curved tube, and shaking and vibration. Drawings (not shown) illustrate a suitable mixing and chopping device and various moulds.
