Abstract
1383849 Impregnating cables WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 18 April 1972 [19 April 1971] 17842/72 Heading D1L In a method for filling the interstices of a stranded cable with a waterproofing compound the cable 2 is fed through an impregnation housing 7 comprising chambers 8 and 9, the waterproofing 'compound 3 being passed under pressure through the housing to cause, assist or retard the longitudinal movement of the cable through the housing 7, the pressure in the upstream chamber 9 being less than that in chamber 8. As illustrated the apparatus includes axially aligned inlet and outlet dies 12, partition wall 10 separating chambers 8 and 9 and transverse bores 18, 19 and 16, 17 for passing the waterproofing compound into and out of chambers 9 and 8 respectively. In operation waterproofing compound 3 is fed from supply tank 6 to inlet 16 of chamber 8 by pump 5 and passes through the chamber in the direction of movement of cable 2 to outlet 17. Outlet 17 is connected via conduit 21 to inlet 18 of chamber 9 the outlet 19 of which returns excess waterproofing compound to supply tank 6. In this way movement of cable 2 is assisted or caused by the movement of pressurised water proofing compound through the housing 7, the pressure exerted on the cable 2 being greater in the downstream chamber 8 then the upstream chamber 9. The direction of flow of the compound 3 may be reversed if retardation of the cable 2 by the viscous drag of the compound is required. Wiping die 4 is provided downstream of the cable outlet of housing 7 to remove excess waterproofing compound. Where more than two successive chambers are used to effect impregnation the pressure of the impregnating liquid is made to increase from station to station in the direction of movement of the cable.
