Abstract
1383668 Shortenable umbrella frames BREMSHEY AG 29 Dec 1972 [21 Sept 1972 21 Oct 1972 7 Dec 1972] 59990/72 Heading A4P A shortenable umbrella frame has a telescopic stick 1, Fig. 6, and a rib system S extending from a crown 6 thereon, system S being formed by inner rib sections 7a and outer rib sections 7b, the movements of sections 7b during opening and closing being determined solely by a support system comprising main struts 25 pivoted between a main slider 24 and sections 7b, auxiliary struts 29 pivoted between struts 24 and a mounting on the stick, such as on auxiliary slider 27, and links 31 pivoted between struts 29 and sections 7b, the inner rib sections 7a bridging between crown 6 and the inner end of each section 7b and being formed by inner and outer parts T1, T2 pivotally connected end to end, the arrangement being such that when the frame is closed but extended the sections 7a, 7b lie alongside the stick but when the frame is thereafter being shortened the parts T1, T2 fold relative to one another to form radially projecting knee joints, Fig. 4, for spreading a mushroom of covering material adjacent crown 6, the inner rib sections 7a being folded and lying alongside the stick with the knee joints remote from the crown in the completely closed and shortened state of the frame. The last-mentioned folding of rib sections 7a occurs automatically if the parts T1 are slightly longer than the parts T2. The parts T1 may be wires and the parts T2 may be U-sectioned and pivoted at their outer ends to brackets 14 on the outer rib sections 7b, to which brackets the links 31 and struts 25 are also pivoted. In a second form, Figs. 7 to 12 (not shown) each inner rib section 7a is made in one piece from plastics material with an integral hinge between parts Tl, T2 which are U-shaped so that they rest one in the other in the collapsed and shortened state of the frame. A brake casing 36, Fig. 6, which is difficult to move, may be located on the stick to aid the achievement of the correct closing sequence by retarding movement of slider 27. In the embodiments of Figs. 1 to 12, the number of parts T1, T2 and 7b are equal. In a third form, Fig. 13, each inner part T1 connects to two parts T2 which diverge from each other to connect to respective ones of an adjacent pair of outer rib sections 7b. Each pair of the parts T2 connected to a respective rib section 7b may be integrally connected to each other at their connection to the rib section 7b.
