Abstract

1383642 Foamed hydrogen-peroxide-modified polymers INTERNATIONAL SYNTHETIC RUBBER CO Ltd 18 Feb 1972 [19 Feb 1971 14 June 1971] 4991/71 and 27747/71 Heading C3C A foamed hydrogen-peroxide-modified polymer is made by foaming a dispersion, which has been obtained by treating a colloidal aqueous dispersion of an unsaturated polymer with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a hydrogen peroxide activator which does not encourage the decomposition of the peroxide to produce molecular oxygen under the conditions of the treatment, and drying the foamed dispersion during or after the cross-linking of the polymer, hydrazine having been added to the dispersion prior to or during the foaming thereof. The polymer may be derived from a natural or synthetic rubber. In the Examples 1-6 a butadiene-styrene copolymer latex was treated with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of sodium tungstate or sodium tetraborate, and then potassium oleate and hydrazine or its hydrate were added; the dispersion was then compounded with gelling and vulcanizing agents, and optionally whiting, and the dispersion was then foamed in a mixer, moulded, gelled, crosslinked and dried; in Example 4 the foam was gelled and cross-linked using radio frequency radiation; and in Example 7 the modified polymer latex was compounded to a non-gel formulation before foaming by addition of a surfactant, sodium lauryl sulphate, sulphur, zinc dithiocarbamate, zinc oxide, an antioxidant, whiting and sodium hexametaphosphate.
