Abstract

1383421 Alkyl polyglycol ether carboxylates CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 12 May 1972 [15 May 1971] 22329/72 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C5 and C3] A mixture of alkyl polyglycolether carboxylates prepared by reacting one mol of unbranched alkanol C n H 2n+1 OH, n represents integer 8 to 22, with n/4 to n/2 mols of ethylene oxide in the presence of a basic alkali metal compound as catalyst and reacting the resultant crude ether mixture with 1 to 1À2 mols of an alkali-metal salt of chloracetic acid in the presence of 1 to 1À2 mols of basic alkali metal compound and removal of the resulting alkali metal chloride is used as a liquid or pulverulent washing or cleansing agent. The alcohols may be capryl, decyl, undecyl, lauryl, tridecyl, myristyl, tetradecyl, palmityl, heptadecyl, and stearyl alcohols and eioosanol and docosanol and sodium or potassium hydroxides or alcoholates may be the alkali compound. An example describes the reaction of a mixture of n-lauryl and tetradecyl alcohols with ethylene oxide followed by reaction with sodium chloroacetate. The mixtures may be used with conventional additives for washing agents and examples are given.
