Abstract

1382251 Cutting plastic materials G K SWEET 27 March 1972 [14 Jan 1971 29 Jan 1971 1 April 1971] 1892/71 3435/71 and 8450/70 Heading B5A In a method of producing a shaped body from a block of solid material, e.g. of foamed polystyrene, the block 15 is conveyed on rollers 14 past an electrically heated cutter wire 35 shaped to a desired profile and mounted in bearings 36 secured to rods 38 reciprocable vertically in guides 40 and driven by a variable speed motor 60 via crank wheels 46 and links 44. The motor also drives, through adjustable gearing, wheels 22, 23 which convey the block which is guided by spring-loaded wheels 16, 17. The cutter wire is pivotally mounted in its bearings and swings about the bearing axes during its vertical reciprocation; for this purpose a rod 52 is attached to the wire and carries a weight 52 causing the rod to rest on an adjustably positioned pin 54 during such reciprocation. In modified constructions the wire (i) is given an independent rotary movement, which may be continuous, about a horizontal axis, (ii) rotates or oscillates about a vertical axis, (iii) oscillates about a horizontal axis, (iv) is reciprocated horizontally by a motor-driven cam, (v) is stationary and the block is of circular cross-section and rotated about its axis whilst being fed past the cutter.
