Abstract
1382192 Pistons P & O RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 5 March 1973 [8 March 1972] 10599/73 Headings F2H and F2T In a self-straining bolt comprising a shank 11, a rod 23 fitting with clearance in an axial bore 16 in the shank, a cylindrical pressure chamber 18 secured to the end of the shank remote from the closed end of the bore, a piston 24 which is slidable in the chamber 18, engages or is integral with the end of the rod 23 adjacent the chamber and is pressurized by fluid under pressure supplied through a conduit 30 in the chamber wall in order to strain the shank of the bolt; the piston is sealed by a disc 29 abutting the working face of the piston which disc is of resilient material having a hardness within the range 10 to 100 Shore hardness and a thickness of at least # inch. The disc may be of nitrile rubber and preferably has a Shore hardness between 40 to 70 and a thickness of at least ¢-inch. The piston may have a radius 27 adjacent its working face and its wall may be tapered away from the working face. The chamber 18 is formed by a cup-shaped body 19 threaded at 21, 22 to the bolt shank 11 and the piston is secured to the rod 23 by a threaded rod 25. The conduit 30 is connectible by a pipe 34 to a source of pressure fluid via a valve 32. In operation, normally before the bolt is inserted in the workpiece such as plates 40, 41, the bolt is pretensioned by connecting the pipe 34 to a pressure source and opening the valve 32 to thereby pressurize the piston and force the rod 23 against the closedend 17 of the bore 16 to strain the shank until the piston abuts the end face 42 of the bolt head 14. The valve 32 is then closed and the pipe 34 disconnected. When required, the bolt is inserted in the apertures in the plates 40, 41 and the nut 13 screwed on the bolt to engage the plate 41, the valve 32 is then opened to relieve the hydraulic pressure and the body 19 is removed from the bolt. A cover 44 and 0-ring 45 are fitted as shown in Fig. 2 to protect the threads 22 on the bolt head. To remove the bolt the process is reversed.
