Abstract

1382036 Measuring vehicle wheel unbalance O BEISSBARTH 11 May 1973 [12 May 1972] 22556/73 Heading G1N The unbalance of a wheel mounted on a vehicle is determined by supporting the wheel axle on a stand or jack through the intermediary of a supporting member on which is mounted an electromechanical transducer, the transducer being mounted in a recess or between two parts of the supporting member and serving to measure the elastic deformation of the supporting member and providing an output signal which serves to determine the magnitude and angular displacement of the unbalance. As shown in Fig.1, the supporting member is in the form of a cantilever arm 3 fixed at one end to an adjustable stand 1, 2, and provided at its other end with a mounting member 4 for the wheel axle. A transducer 6 is arranged in a recess in the compression region of the arm 3. The recess may be arranged in the tension region, Fig.3 (not shown). In Fig.4 (not shown), the supporting member is removably fitted into the head of a conventional jack and the mounting member is adjustable in height. As shown in Fig.5, the supporting member is U-shaped and forms the head of a jack of which the lifting arm 31 and the supporting link 32 only are shown. In a modification of this latter embodiment, Fig.6 (not shown), the axle mounting means is supported with clearance in an aperture in an extension of the upper limb and rest on a ball in a recess in the lower limb so that the position of the axle on the mounting member is immaterial. As in Fig.7 (not shown) the transducer 74 is arranged vertically between the two limbs 71, 72 of a U-shaped supporting member 70. The two limbs may be of the same length, Fig.8 (not shown). In a further embodiment, Fig.9 (not shown), the transducer is vertically mounted in a recess of a vertical column acting as the supporting member. In the described embodiments, the transducer is either mounted between two balls or between a ball and a compression spring, and pre-tensioning means in the form of a screw may be provided to adjust the pre-tension on the transducer.
