Abstract

1381977 Continuous casting I ROSSI 8 Feb 1972 [11 Feb 1971 23 April 1971] 5921/72 Heading B3F A slab or billet 116 issues from a curved or straight mould 112 to be buttressed by bars 117 on the mould base and sprayed with coolant, and is gripped and pushed by rolls 125, 126, Figs. 1, 4, down through a tube 132, Figs. 1 and 5, wherein it is contacted by bars 137 and becomes straight and horizontal. While being guided, the strand 116 is sprayed with coolant from jets 140-143 in the tube 132. A starter plug, Fig. 7, with a head 151 of copper, is thrust down into the copper mould 112 before pouring. It has a number of copper members 154-158 with curved contacting surfaces for flexibility and with slots through which flexible steel strip 159 passes. The members 154-157 are of H-section and the strip 158 extends from the head 151 to a bolt 161 surrounded by a spring 162 between the end member 157 and a nut 163. When the bar clears a shear 147, the strand is severed.
