March 4, 1919, Spinning, doubling, and twisting machines with twisting- arrangements at delivery; winding-machines; clearing-apparat u s ; driving - arrangements; thread-guides; stop-apparatus, non-automatic.-A machine for twisting doubled yarns, or yarn from roving bobbins, or for imparting additional twist to yarn, and for winding the twisted yarn in cheeses or on doubleflanged bobbins, comprises driven spindles a, similar to mule spindles, which carry the yarns to be twisted, and swing- frames b which carry the spindles for the tube or bobbin on which the yarn is to be wound, and are so weighted as to ensure a steady pressure of the cheeses or bobbins on the driving-drum. The frame b, Fig. 7, is adjustably mounted on a rod b<3> by set-screws b<4>, and is provided with an arm b<6> carrying a bar d, which slides on a bowl d<x> and is' weighted and locked by a weighted lever e. The frame can rise in accordance with the growth of the cheese, or can be raised by drawing out the bar d, but is maintained in any position by the lever e. The yarn passes from the twisting-spindles through a flat clearer-plate i<2> over a guide-pulley to a traversing-guide h. The guide is provided with a finger h<1>, Fig. 6, around which the yarn is passed, and channels h<2>, h<3> into which the yarn automatically runs when the traverse begins. The traverse bar may be oscillated by a cam f<4x>, Fig. 9, the bowl being adjustable towards and from the centre. The spindles are driven by cords, and the drums by gearing from a shaft a<10>, which carries two sets of fast and loose pulleys, one being driven by an open and the other by a crossed belt, whereby the spindles may be driven for twist or weft. To prevent reverse driving of the drums when changing the direction of rotation of the spindles, a gear i<x>, Fig. 11, on the tin-roller shaft a<10>, which normally gears directly with the first spurwheel 2 of the drum gearing, may be moved longitudinally of the shaft a<10> and drive the wheel 2 through a pinion 11 on a swing bracket 13. A knee brake a<8> may be fitted to each twisting- spindle. In the Provisional Specification, it is stated that mechanism which permits the rising of the bobbin frame, but maintains a uniform pressure, may comprise a cam-motion or link system, or a weighted lever pivoted on the rail which ordinarily supports the catch and engaging a slotted upstanding arm on a swing frame of known type that carries the bobbin, or a lever arm carrying a cam-lever which effects the locking and weighting, and a pin which rests on a curved lever; it is further stated that split drums may be used.
