Abstract
1381923 Treating textiles TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc and HISAKA WORKS Ltd 9 March 1972 [15 March 1971] 10969/72 Heading D1L Fibrous articles are treated with an aqueous liquid by a process comprising (i) charging fibrous articles into at least one treating chamber between upper and lower horizontal partitions and forming in each chamber a stratum of articles extending horizontally on the lower partition (ii) circulating the aqueous treating liquid only at a flow rate of 10 to 30 litres per minute per kg. of said articles through the upper partition and then the lower partition in a direction normal to the partitions or vice versa. The fibrous article stratum has an apparent filling density of 0.09 to 0.16 g/cm<SP>3</SP> under atmospheric conditions, and a thickness in the treating liquid having the relationship, L 1 #0.9L 2 where L 1 is the distance between the upper and lower partitions and L 2 is the thickness of the article stratum in the liquid under no pressure or stretching forces. The fibrous article stratum has also a resistance of 0.2 to 0.5 kg/cm<SP>2</SP> to the flow of the liquid. The articles may be superposed in two or more chambers. The stratum is preferably formed of yarns in muffs with the spaces between the muffs filled with fillers which do not allow penetration by the treating liquid. Suitable apparatus for carrying out the process consists of an outside tank 31, an inside casing 32 and a header 33. The bottom 34, of tank 31 is connected to alternate direction pump 35 through a conduit 36. A heater 60 is included in bottom 34. Inner casing 32 includes a cylinder 37 connected at the bottom end to pump 35 through a conduit 38, and an outside cylinder 39 defining a treating space 40 between the inside surface of the outside cylinder 39 and the outside surface of the inside cylinder 37. A header 41 closes the upper end of the treating space 40. The treating space 40 contains three chambers 44, 45, and 46 independent of each other. Horizontal partitions 47, 48, and 50 having a plurality of apertures 49, for allowing liquid to pass therethrough define the chambers. The filler may be selected from natural and synthetic resins, metallic materials and wood. The fibrous material may be loose fibres, filament tows, slivers hank-formed yarns, muff-formed yarns, knitted fabrics or bulky woven fabrics. The treatment may be dyeing or oiling wherein the treating liquid contains at least one dye or one oiling agent. After treatment the fibrous articles are preferably dried e.g. by blowing hot air through the treated stratum of fibrous articles whilst in the treating chamber.
