Abstract
1381706 Loose bed filter J W L NOLAN [trading as WATER FILTRATION ENG SERVICES] 30 Dec 1971 [24 Nov 1970] 55811/70 Heading B1D An apparatus for filtration of water comprises a cylindrical vessel 1 having a flat bottom 2 and water inlets 17 and 18 and outlet 19. The interior of the vessel is divided by annular screens 4 and 7. Coarse filter material 5 and 10, e.g. granite clippings, are packed around the outside of the screen 4 and within the screen. 7. A finer filter material fills the space 11 between the two screens. The screen 7 carries a perforated cover 10a to form a chamber 8 communicating with outlet 19 through a pipe 6 having perforations in its side and a cover 9 at its upper end, the cover also having perforations therein. The perforations in the pipe 6 are of the form of overlapping rows of slit-like apertures (6a, Fig. 2 not shown). During filtration liquid enters at 17 and 18, in the latter case via distributing trough 17a and passes both downwardly and laterally through the filter material before leaving via pipe 6 and outlet 19. The filter material is cleaned by back washing and for this purpose lateral and radial backwash pipes 13 and 15, respectively, are fitted in the vessel 1 and spaced above the floor thereof. The backwash pipes have perforations in the vertically upward direction and downwardly and outwardly to each side. Backwash fluid leaves at 17. An inwardly inclined baffle 12 prevents the finer filter material being carried over. A filter head drain, pipe 25 is also provided.
