Abstract

1381705 Safety belt warning arrangements AUTO RESTRAINT SYSTEMS Ltd 11 Jan 1972 [16 Oct 1970] 49266/70 Heading B7H A seat belt warning system for vehicles which provide an audible or visual warning or interrupts the vehicle ignition or starter circuit comprises a first switch SH which senses whether a seat is occupied and a second switch B which senses whether the belt is fastened. Switches SH and SV are mounted in the base and the back of the seat respectively for closure when pressure is applied thereto. Switches R 1 , R 2 , and R 3 are associated with the inertia reel of a seat belt retractor for actuation upon withdrawal of a small length of seat belt; the switches R 1 and R 2 are normally closed and the switch R 3 normally open. The switch B is disposed within the seat belt buckle. When an occupant is seated switches SH and SV are closed such that a relay D is closed through normally closed switch R 1 to close contacts D 1 . The withdrawal of the seat belt from the reel causes the switch R 3 to close, but as contacts D 2 were opened upon energization of relay D the circuit to warning device A is open. Also, switch R 2 being open interrupts the circuit through ingition switch IG. Should the ignition switch be closed before withdrawal of the belt a circuit to warning device A is provided. Also, if pressure is applied to switch SH after fastening the belt the warning device is operated. The warning device may also be applied to static seat belts by embodying the switches R 1 , R 2 and R 3 in the buckle for actuation upon fastening. A normally closed switch is provided between the warning device and a multiple connector C, e.g. for operation upon opening a door, so as to prevent unintentional operation when a driver stops, with the engine running, to set down a passenger.
