Abstract

1381678 Effluent treatment A HEIDRICH 7 Aug 1972 [7 Aug 1971] 36829/72 Heading C1C [Also in Division C5] A method of purifying effluent which may be contaminated with greases, oils and soot, comprises treating the effluent with a cleansing agent which is a mixture of sodium tripolyphosphate sprayed with sodium hydroxide, or sodium hexametaphosphate sprayed with sodium hydroxide, sodium aluminate and chlorocyanuric acid or the salts thereof. The cleansing agent may also contain a diphosphate, wood flour (as a filter aid), active carbon or silicic acid. The method may be carried out in an apparatus of the type shown in the accompanying Figure wherein contaminated water and cleansing agent are fed to a reaction tank 4 provided with agitator 8. The liquid is then circulated first to a viscous material separator 14 in the form of a centrifuge and then to an alluvial filter 16. Additional material, e.g. filtrants may be added to the liquid by means of additional metering means 17, 18 and 20. The latter means controls the pH of the liquid at the filter outlet. The filtrate passes through a transparent tube located near the light barrier 28. A photo-electric cell at this barrier monitors the transparency or otherwise of the filtrate and permits it, by a system of valves, to be discharged at 34, or recirculated to reaction tank 4. Viscous material from 14 is pressed in 44 and expressed liquid also recirculated to tank 4. The method is particularly applicable to the treatment of dairy effluent, or the treatment of moorland or marshy water contaminated with putrefactive products.
