Abstract

1381590 Measuring web tension SIEMENS AG 29 Oct 1973 [22 Nov 1972] 50254/73 Addition to 1337532 Heading G1W The tensile stresses in a web 1 are monitored by a device comprising a duct 4 to which a fluid under pressure is supplied by a pump 9, and a series of chambers 5 open at their ends adjacent the web and connected to the duct 4 at their opposite ends by throttle apertures 8, some of the chambers 5' adjacent the ends of the row of chambers being provided with further throttle apertures 12 through which the flow of fluid to those chambers may be increased. Each of the chambers 5' provided with further throttle apertures 12 has a pneumatically or electromagnetically operated valve 15 by means of which the apertures 12 may be opened or closed. In practice, the outermost chamber 5' that is covered by the web at each end of the row of chambers has its further apertures 12 opened so that the extra flow of fluid compensates for effects due to edge loss of the fluid. The fluid may be air, or may be a liquid. The pressure below the web is measured by means of measuring tubes 10. The chambers 5' at each end of the row that have further throttle apertures 12 may be separated from one another by chambers 5 without further throttle apertures Figs. 3, 4 (not shown).
