Abstract

1381167 Automatic current control PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Jan 1972 [29 Jan 1971] 3625/72 Heading G3R [Also in Division H2] A gas discharge tube used for display of characters comprises at least one anode and a plurality of cathodes in the form of characters, at least one of the cathodes being arranged to luminesce for all the characters to be displayed the circuit of which cathode comprises a resistor across which a control voltage is developed and which serves as the input signal to a constant current source whereby the current flowing in the resistor, and hence the cathode circuit is maintained constant. A gas discharge tube 1 comprises three anodes 3, 5, 7 each anode being associated with four cathodes 9-15, the corresponding cathodes being connected in parallel and each group having a resistor 27 or 29 or 31 or 33 connected in series therewith. The supply for the anodes 3, 5, 7 is derived from a constant current source 22 by way of respective transistors 17, 19, 21 control of which is effected by a so-called decoder 23. Cathodes 11, 15 are arranged to luminesce for all the characters displayed and the voltages developed across resistors 29, 33 and fed to the base of a transistor 51 in the current source 22 by way of diode gate 45, 47. The difference between the base voltage and the emitter voltage set by a Zener diode 53 determines the base and collector currents of transistor 51 and these determine the output voltage of a converter constituted by a transformer 57 and a transistor 61, the output voltage of which is rectified by a diode 63 for application to the anodes 3, 5, 7. Thus the output voltage of the source 22 is maintained constant at a value determined by the Zener diode 53 and hence the current in the cathode circuits of the tube are also kept constant. Luminescing of the cathodes 9-15 is terminated by transistors 37-43 being made conductive by way of the decoder 23.
