Abstract
1380924 Helical-scan type recorders RCA CORPORATION 10 March 1972 [16 March 1971] 6965/71 Heading G5R [Also in Division G3] In a helical scan recording/reproducing system, mistracking of the rotary heads owing to the stretching of the tape as it passes around the head's drum is counteracted by placing the associated stationary control head on/adjacent the drum at the position where the stretching has reached half the total value; since the stretching varies non-linearly with distance between the points at which the tape initially contacts/finally leave the drum, e.g. points 14, 16, in the arrangement shown, the control head 18 must be placed at a position other than the "geometric mean" position 19. The control signals in the longitudinal track 17, Fig. 1b, are used to control the rotary heads in conventional manner (Fig. 2, not shown). The control head may be on either face of the tape, as discussed with reference to Figs. 8, 9 (not shown).
