Abstract

1380770 Automatic control of electro-slag refining CHUVASHSKY GOSUDARSTVENNY UNIVERSITET IMENI I N ULYANOVA 22 March 1972 13318/72 Heading G3R [Also in Division H5] In a method of controlling an electro-slag furnace having a consumable electrode 4 and a non-consumable electrode 9, an electrical parameter of each electrode circuit is measured and the ratio of said parameters determined in a unit 11, this ratio being compared, in comparator 13, with a reference value from a source 12, and a resultant error signal being used to control an electro-mechanical drive 15 which adjusts the position of the electrode 9. As shown, both electrodes 4, 9 are connected to a supply 6 and their respective currents I 1 , I 2 measured by transducers 16, 17 which feed corresponding voltages to the unit 11. The unit 11 incorporates a Schmidt trigger circuit Fig.3 (not shown) and produces an intermittent voltage of mean value proportional to the ratio of the parameters. This voltage is fed to control windings (49, 50) of a magnetic amplifier (51). Bias windings (55, 56) Fig.4 (not shown) of the magnetic amplifier (51) are supplied from the reference source 12. The amplifier's main windings (57, 58) are each arranged in circuit with a transistor (73 or 74), Fig.5 (not shown) to produce square pulses to trigger a thyristor (65 or 66). The thyristors (65, 66) control the current to a motor (75) which adjusts the position of the electrode 9 to keep the ratio of the parameters at the pre-set value. The electrode 9 need not be connected to the supply 6 in which case the signals fed to the unit 11 are proportional to voltages on the electrodes 4, 9 Fig.1 (not shown).
