Abstract
1380726 Ingot moulds BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 21 April 1972 [11 May 1971] 14241/71 Heading B3F A mould for casting rectangular ingots comprises four wall members 2, 4 and four corner members 8 held together by clamping means (e.g. a strap 42 and a clasp 44) and a support 14, 24 enabling the assembled mould to be lifted. The walls 2, 4 and corner members 8 have curved mating surfaces 10, to enable them to pivot with respect to one another, when expanding due to the heat of molten metal cast into the mould. A top plate 26 maintains the walls 2, 4 and corner members 8 together in position and is provided with slots 34 and apertures 36 which register with apertures 30, 32 in the wall 2, 4 and corner members 8. Pins 38 pass through registering apertures 32, 36 or registering slots 34 and apertures 30, the slots 34 allowing bowing of walls 2, 4 on expansion. The walls 2, 4 and corner members rest upon an apertured support plate 14 with lifting lugs 24. When casting the assembled mould is placed on a stool (not shown), metal teemed into the mould, (the walls 2, 4 bowing outwards as they heat up whilst the metal solidifies), and lifted clear of the cast ingot by lugs 24. The clamping means may be spring clips (not shown) engaging lugs (not shown) welded to the walls.
