Abstract

1380705 Softening and brightening compositions KAO SOAP CO Ltd 21 Dec 1971 [23 Dec 1970] 59227/71 Heading DIP A textile softening, brightening and antiyellowing composition comprises (I) 1 to 10 parts by weight of a cationic surface active agent of formula I: wherein R 1 and R 2 are C 12 -C 22 alkyl radicals, R 3 and R 4 are C 1 -C 4 alkyl radicals and X- is a halogen ion CH 3 SO 4 - or C 2 H 5 SO 4 -; (2) 0.05 to 0.5 parts by weight of an optical brightener of general formula V wherein M is an alkali metal or ethaneolamine, and (3) 0.5 to 10 parts by weight of a cationic surface active agent characterised in that it has, per molecule (i) one or more quaternary nitrogen atoms, (ii) 1 to 3 groups of formula -(CH 2 CH 2 O) a H attached to each quaternary nitrogen atom, where a is an integer of at least 1 and is further such that the total number of (CH 2 CH 2 O) units per quaternary nitrogen atom in the molecule is not greater than 14 and optionally, (iii) one or two of RCH 2 -, RCONH(CH 2 ) n - or RCOO(CH 2 ) n - in which R is C 11 -C 21 alkyl and n is an integer of 1 to 3. The ingredient (3) may be a quaternary ammonium salt of general formula VI an alkylene diammonium salt of general formula VII a compound of general formula VIII an imidazolinium salt of general formula IX The compositions may be or formulated as aqueous solutions with additives such as ethylene or propylene glycol, alkali metal or ammonium chloride, ethanol or isopropanol, and urea. The formulations are stable without precipitation of the optical brightener and may be used to give a uniform brightening of cotton or polyester-cotton fabric which may have been previously treated with a stilbene type optical brightener.
