Abstract
1380629 Matrix displays ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL CORP 10 July 1972 [4 Oct 1971] 32223/72 Heading G5C A display comprises a liquid crystal panel having two terminals, means for selectively applying a H.F. signal to a terminal to prevent activation of the liquid crystal and means for selectively applying out-of-phase low-frequency signals to both terminals to produce activation. The panel comprises a plurality of sets of electrodes with corresponding electrodes of each set connected and back electrodes aligned with the sets. Each group of interconnected electrodes and each back electrode is connected to a driver circuit 21 ... 27; 33 ... 36. Each circuit comprises an inverter 43, 54; two NAND gates 44, 49; 51, 53; an AND gate 46, 52 and an amplifier 47, 55. Low and high frequency pulse signals are applied via terminals 41, 42 to the NAND gates, low frequency signals to drivers 21 ... 27 being inverted by inverter 28. Depending on the control signal applied to inputs 50 the output is of low or high frequency pulses. The low frequency signals are applied sequentially to the back electrodes by signals from a ring counter and sequentially to groups of driver circuits each group corresponding to the electrodes forming a digit to be displayed. During the time that a group is energized the D.C. potential may be reversed. Alternatively H.F. signals are applied only to the back electrodes. The panel may include a mirror when used in the reflective manner.
