Abstract

1380098 Automatic control of plasma arc spraying METCO Inc 7 Nov 1972 [5 June 1972] 51193/72 Heading G3R Plasma flame spraying apparatus includes an arrangement for automatically controlling arc current and secondary plasma gas flow around the arc so that both increase and reach predetermined working values at approximately the same time. As shown, a plasma gun 19 receives primary plasma-forming gas and a cooling sheath of secondary gas at a flow-rate controlled by an accumulator in a valve module 17 which also supplies gas for carrying powder for spraying to the gun. The gas used may be nitrogen or argon. An arc is established by an ignition circuit including a high frequency generator 13, and a power supply circuit 11 includes a saturable winding controlled by transistors and an SCR. In closed loop operation, the arc current is held at a predetermined level for a given plasma gas flow, the current being sensed to produce a control signal which is fed through an amplifier to the firing circuit of the SCR. The current detector may be a shunt, a Hall effect device or a photo-cell arrangement. During start-up, the control signal is used to open a solenoid valve to increase the gas flow with the arc current. Line voltage fluctuations are compensated by a Zener diode circuit, Fig. 5 (not shown), and an overcurrent protection relay (270) is also included Fig. 10 (not shown).
