Abstract

1379684 Rocket engines - silencing TRW Inc 10 March 1972 [10 March 1971 (2)] 11390/72 Headings F1B F1J and F1L The invention relates to a method of cooling and acoustic damping of the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine by injecting foam into the boundary of the exhaust gases, the invention being described with reference to a rocket engine. The rocket engine shown comprises a fuel injector 15 and an oxidizer supply duct 18. An annular manifold 20 is disposed around the upstream end of the combustion chamber and communicates therewith through apertures 21. A foam generator 25 communicates with the manifold whereby foam may be discharged into the combustion chamber adjacent the outer surface of the combustion gases. A foam agent may be discharged directly into the flow of oxidizer whereby the foam is formed directly in the combustion chamber. In another embodiment the foam manifold is disposed around the jet pipe whereby the foam is discharged into the outer peripheral surface of the jet gases. In Fig. 3 the foam is discharged from an annular manifold 36 disposed around the outlet of the jet nozzle, a cylindrical screen 37 being so disposed that foam discharges through the screen into the jet gases.
