Abstract

1379473 Digital measurement of dimension SENSORS Inc 4 March 1972 10226/72 Heading G1A The dimensions of an object having an undulating shape, such as a threaded screw or bolt, are measured by an array of spaced photoelectric devices as the object passes in front, the photo-electric devices being repeatedly interrogated as to which is shadowed by the object, either simultaneously or consecutively many times during the passage of the object. As shown in Fig. 2 two spaced arrays of photoelectric devices 44, 64 view the boundaries of a fitted screw, values of the diameter of the screw so obtained being compared with threshold diameters 66, 68 for the major and minor diameters of the thread. The detection of a major or minor diameter causes a respective counter to be integrated which on the passage of the screw should attain predetermined counts if the screw is acceptable. Alternatively, the diameter values obtained by the photo-electric arrays can be compared with stored values, a start photo-electric device sensing the arrival of a screw.
