Abstract

1379447 Pistons; valves TELEDYNE INDUSTRIES Inc 18 March 1972 12787/72 Heading F2T and F2V In a variable compression ratio piston for an I.C. engine and having a piston shell 14 slidable on a carrier 12 and a variable volume oil chamber 30, 32 the discharge opening from the oil chamber is provided with a restricted annular oil-flow passage for filtering foreign objects from the oil. Figs. 1 and 3, shows the invention applied to the discharge opening 38, a ring member 36 being spaced from a wall 108 of an annular recess 104 to form the restricted annular oil-flow passage 114. Figs. 1 and 2, shows the invention applied to the discharge valve assembly 62, the valve casing 116 having a flange 132 spaced from a wall 122 of a bore 122 to form the restricted annular oilflow passage 130. In operation, oil is fed through the connecting rod, oil collector 50 and valve assembly 58 to the oil chamber which is divided into upper and lower chambers 30, 32. The valve assembly 58 consists of a pair of flat triangular valve plates 76 which float between valve seats 74 and castellated stop members 80, 82. During each cycle of operation, the piston shell 14 tends to move upwardly tending to expand the chamber 30 and contract the chamber 32 so that the lower valve-plate 76 closes oil to the lower chamber 32 to form an hydraulic lock between the piston shell and the carrier 14. Since, however, the discharge opening 38 permits oil to escape from the chamber 32, the piston shell will move upwardly a small distance on each engine cycle. When the gas pressure exceeds the upper limit, the discharge valve member 136 of the discharge valve assembly 62 lifts to discharge some oil from the chamber 30. This oil passes through the passages 130, 124 and 128 to act on an annular surface 143 of the valve member 136. When the oil pressure exceeds the upper limit, the valve member lifts to discharge the oil through the discharge orifice 134 in the valve seat 142 to the crankcase. The valve assemblies 58 and 62 are preferably conically-shaped for retention in bores provided in the carrier.
