1379335 Polyethers KENDALL CO 19 July 1973 34496/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Novel nonionic monomeric emulsion stabilizers of the formula R-O-V, wherein V denotes acryloyloxyethyl, methacryloyloxyethyl, acryloyloxy - 2 - hydroxypropyl, methacryloyloxy - 2 - hydroxypropyl, allyl, methallyl, allyloxy - 2 - hydroxypropyl or methallyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl, R denotes L-O-(CH 2 CH 2 O) n -CO-Y-CO- or R<SP>1</SP>(CH 2 CH 2 O) n -CO-CH 2 -CHL<SP>1</SP>-CO-, Y denotes a C 2-3 alkylene group, a phenylene group or a phenylene group in which one or more of the hydrogen atoms is replaced by a C 1-4 alkyl group or by a halogen atom, with the proviso that the number of ring carbon atoms between the two carbonyl groups is 2, n is an integer from 9 to 50, L denotes a lipophilic radical, preferably a C 8-28 aliphatic hydrocarbon group optionally bonded through a phenylene linkage, or a group of the formula (where m is an integer of from 10 to 30), L<SP>1</SP> denotes a lipophilic aliphatic hydrocarbon group, and R<SP>1</SP> denotes methoxy, ethoxy, acetoxy, proprionoxy or hydroxyl, are prepared (1) by reacting a non-ionic surfactant with an appropriate dicarboxylic acid anhydride to form an intermediate reaction product, and either reacting subsequently with glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate or with allyl or methallyl glycidyl ether, or by reacting subsequently with hydroxyethyl acrylate or methacrylate or with allyl or methallyl alcohol in the presence of an esterification catalyst; or (2) by reacting a suitable substituted succinic anhydride containing a lipophilic aliphatic hydrocarbon group L<SP>1</SP> either with a glycol R<SP>1</SP>-(CH 2 CH 2 O) n H followed by further reaction with glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate, or allyl ormethallyl glycidyl ether, or with allyl or methallyl alcohol, hydroxyethyl acrylate or methacrylate, or 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate or methacrylate followed by further reaction with ethylene oxide or a glycol of the formula R<SP>1</SP>-(CH 2 CH 2 O) n H.
