Abstract

1379316 Synthetic resins M TAKAHARA 23 March 1972 [7 Aug 1971] 13652/72 Heading C3P Synthetic resins suitable for sizing paper and emulsifiers in the production of synthetic rubber are prepared by copolymerizing an olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon containing 5 to 11 carbon atoms and having a boiling point of 20 to 300‹ C. with an unsaturated carboxylic acid or an anhydride, ester or nitrile thereof in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst optionally together with a polymerization regulator and/or dehydration catalyst, condensing the resulting product with rosin, tall oil or a higher aliphatic acid in the presence of formaldehyde, and optionally hydrolysing. The hydrocarbon may be styrene or a mixture of hydrocarbons from petroleum refining or coal carbonization. The acid may be maleic, fumaric, crotonic, itaconic, acrylic or methacrylic acid. The catalyst may be an aluminium or iron halide, alkyl sulphate sulphuric acid or boron trifluoride or ether complex thereof. The regulator may be sodium thiosulphite, sodium sulphite, methyl or ethyl mercaptan, thioglycol, thioglycolic or thiopropionic acid, thiourea or 1,3-diethyl thiourea. The dehydration catalyst may be hydrogen chloride, phosphoric or p-toluenesulphonic acids, cupric or ferric sulphate, or potassium pyrosulphate. Suitable higher aliphatic acids are lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids. In examples (1) styrene is copolymerized with maleic anhydride, and cracked naphtha distillates with (2) acrylonitrile, (3) fumaric acid, (4) ethyl acrylate and (5) maleic anhydride; and the products are reacted with (1) tall oil, (2) tallow acids, (3) oleic acid, (4) palmitic acid and (5) rosin in the presence of formaldehyde, the products being saponified with (1-4) potassium hydroxide and (5) sodium hydroxide.
