Abstract

1379199 Floor and carpet sweepers; rotary brushes BISSELL Inc 14 June 1973 [22 June 1972] 28429/73 Headings A4F and A4K A floor or carpet sweeper has a frame mounted on wheels 5 and supporting main brushes 6, 7 extending transversely of the frame, and incorporates one and preferably two auxiliary annular brushes 26 mounted to sweep litter into the path of the main brushes, each auxiliary brush 26 being set in a member 22 keyed for rotation in a substantially horizontal plane with a shaft 14 which is driven by a wheel 19 mounted at 10-20 degrees to the horizontal so that its rim 20, e.g. a high friction polyurethane tyre, engages the floor or carpet and is driven thereby as the sweeper is moved. The member 22 is mounted on the shaft 14 with axial and radial play so that the brush 26 can tilt and float over irregularities in the surface of the floor or carpet. Preferably the tufts of the brush 26 are inclined downwards 10-20 degrees relative to a side wall 24 of the member 22. A flanged lip 25 on the member 22 prevents substantial deformation of the brush 26 should it dig into a carpet. The drive for the brushes 6, 7 may be such that they rotate in the same direction regardless of the direction of movement of the sweeper.
