Abstract

1379010 Making helical coils PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 May 1973 23237/73 Heading B3A [Also in Division H1] A method of manufacturing an inductor from an electrically conducting sheet consists of making slits 5, 7, 9 extending from edge 4 and 6 and 8 from edge 3 alternately to provide an overlap region between broken lines 10a and 10b, with strips 11 to 16, which are separated by slits and are then bowed alternately in opposite directions to form a helical coil. The sheet is rectangular and has integral extensions 2. In another embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the opposite edges are circular and form a toroidal coil. The slitting and bowing may be done in one operation by a punch and die tool and this operation may include cropping and tag forming. An automatic feed and repeat type press may be used. The sheet may be of an electrically conducting material, such as copper, which may be of ordinary commercial grade or a layer of this on flexible electrically insulating heat formable material. The sheet may be produced by conventional printed circuit techniques. Heat is applied during bowing so that the plastics material retains its shape on cooling. There may be a magnetic core which may be in a threaded bore in an electrically insulating material in which the coil is embedded, the bore and coil axes being coincident. The core may be fixed by adhesive. The end portions of the plate joining the strips are slanted with respect to their original plane to ease the strain when bowing.
