Abstract

1379001 Multistage forming machine US BAIRD CORP 1 Jan 1973 [1 Feb 1972] 37/73 Heading B3H A multistage press and forming machine comprising a series of working stations, e.g. piercing, blanking, swaging, drawing, bending, riveting and assembling for processing wire or strip fed along a process line through the stations, has its mounting bed 12, Fig. 5, made up of a central module 44 to which one or more auxiliary modules 46 can be connected to provide incremental increases in the length and area of the bed. The modules are provided with T-section slots 48 on their tops and sides to permit the mounting of workpiece feed attachments, processing attachments and mounting brackets 38, Fig. 6, for a set of actuating shafts 28 to actuate the various operating attachments. The machine includes a workpiece stock feed attachment 14, Fig. 1, a stock check attachment 18, press forming stations 20, 22, 24 for progressive operations on the stock and a blank transfer attachment 26 for the press stations. All the attachments are driven from the peripheral actuating shafts 28 which are interconnected by bevel gears 36 and driven by a flywheel pulley 39 from a variable speed drive (40) and motor (42), Fig. 3 (not shown). The stock check attachment, 18, Fig. 14, comprises a fixed shoe 65 and a movable shoe 66 which is movable under the actuation of a cam 78 against spring-bias 74 to grip the stock 16 against the fixed shoe 65. The position of the fixed shoe is adjustable for various stock thicknesses. The actuating shaft 28 on the other side of the stock check attachment has a cam 90 operating a linkage 82, 84 to rotate a splined shaft 64 which operates the jaws of the stock feed attachment 14. The stock feed attachment, 14, Fig. 12, comprises a carriage 94 reciprocable along guide rods 92 in the stock feed direction by an adjustable stroke drive (140)-(150), Fig. 10 (not shown), and provided with a gripping mechanism 100, Fig. 12. The gripper mechanism comprises a link 114 pivoted by the splined shaft 64 to move a gripping shoe 124 relative to a fixed plate 136 to trap the stock 16 therebetween. A wedging device 130, 132 is provided to adjust the gripping position of the shoe 124. In operation the stock feed attachment 14 feeds stock incrementally from a storage reel in synchronism with the gripping of the stock by the check attachment during the return stroke of the feed attachment. The blank transfer attachment 26, Fig. 18, comprises a pair of parallel rails 154 slidably guided in blocks on the machine bed under the action of a cam drive 190, Fig. 26 (not shown). Each rail has a set of finger assemblies 156 which co-operate with the finger assemblies of the other rail to grip and blank 158 which has been sheared from the stock during the processing. Each assembly 156, Fig. 17, has a spring-urged finger 168 from which the blank is removed by stripper fingers during the return stroke of the assemblies. (For Figures see next page.)
