Abstract

1378900 Steering wheels BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE AG 20 Dec 1971 [24 Dec 1970] 59100/71 Heading B7J A steering wheel 1 comprises a hub 8, an annular deformation disc of corrugated sheet metal 4, having circular concentric corrugations 5 and 6, welded to the hub and extending substantially radially therefrom, the outer circumference of the disc being secured to an annular flange 9, and spokes 10 connecting the flange to a rim 11. A cap 13 of elastic material fits on an inwardly-turned edge 12 of the flange 9. When the wheel is subjected, in use, to an axial or oblique impact, at least part of one or more of the corrugated portions of the disc is stretched and the disc assumes an inverted pot shape, the outer circumference thereof and the flange 12 then contacting control levers, e.g. for screen wipers and moving them away from the vehicle driver, as described with reference to Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
