Abstract

1378762 Electric couplings AMERACE ESNA CORP 25 Nov 1971 [3 Feb 1971] 54866/71 Heading H2E A device for attaching an earthing conductor 54 to the metal shield 24 of a cable comprises a conductive band 50, e.g. of copper strip which extends around at least a portion of the outer periphery of the shield 24 and is provided with axially extending corrugations 52 which allow the band to flex resiliently in a radial direction to allow for thermal variations in cable diameter. Peaks 62 are in electrical contact with shield 24, and the earthing conductor 54 is affixed within a groove e.g. by brazing or soldering. An elastomeric sleeve 44, preferably made conductive, surrounds the band 50. The band is clamped into contact with the shield by means of strap 46. A housing 72 of conductive elastomeric material may surround the earthing device, a collar 84 being provided for the earthing rod 54 to pass through. As shown in Fig. 2, the ends of the housing may respectively grip the cable jacket and the cover of a cable connector to provide a water-tight cover. In an alternative embodiment the housing is omitted, the sleeve 44 being extended in both directions from the band 50; the ends respectively gripping the cable and connector cover as before (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown).
