Abstract
1378735 Travelling-wave tubes ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO Ltd 17 May 1973 [22 Feb 1973] 23471/73 Heading H1D In a travelling-wave tube having a coupledcavity slow-wave structure with resonant coupling elements-e.g. slots or loops-coupling adjacent cavities, the resonant frequencies of the coupling elements at the output end of the structure obey a tapering law in which the frequency is convergent on the cavity resonant frequency towards the output, whereby the velocity tapering of the r.f. wave is a function of frequency over the operating bandwidth of the tube, to allow for the fact that the dispersive nature of the coupled-cavity structure produces increased slowing of the beam at the low frequency end of the band. For slot-coupled structures, e.g. of cloverleaf type, the dimensions of the slots, and in centipede structures either the amplitude or the circumferential spacing of the loops, may vary. The tapering law is preferably linear, and may provide part only of the velocity taper, the remainder being produced by a variation of the axial length of the cavities, which produces a frequency independent taper.
