1378572 Toner/photochromic images: photoconductive member FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 19 Jan 1972 [19 Jan 1971] 2663/72 Headings G2C and G2H A coloured image is produced by charging a photo-conductive member containing photoconductive and photochromic material, imagewise exposing to radiation to which the photochromic material is insensitive, developing with toner which modifies or masks the photochromic compound and exposing to ultraviolet light. The photo-conductive member may have a coating comprising a photo-conductive resin and 0À1-10% of a photochromic compound based on the resin. The photo-conductive resin may be polyvinyl naphthalene, anthracene, diphenyl, fluorene, acenaphthalene, pyrene, naphthacene, perylene, carbazole, phenothiazine, acridine, benzofuran, pyrazoline, oxazole or fluorene or polyacryloylcarbazole. The photochromic compound may be of the general formula: wherein R<SP>1</SP> represents an alkyl radical having 1-5 carbon atoms, a carboxyl-, cyano- or estersubstituted alkyl radical or a phenyl radical, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> each represent alkyl radicals having from 1-5 carbon atoms or phenyl radicals or together represent the group -(CH 2 )-n where n is 4 or 5, X represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or a nitro, alkoxy, hydroxycarbonyl or alkoxycarbonyl group or an alkyl radical having 1-5 carbon atoms and Y represents one or more of any of a hydrogen or halogen atom or a nitro, aldehyde or alkoxy group. Development may be with (a) a resin which hinders colour-development of the photochromic compound, (b) a resin which colourdevelops upon contact with the photochromic compound in the absence of light, (c) a mixture of a resin and a more polar compound, which mixture colour-develops upon contact with the photochromic compound and exposure to light, or (d) a coloured resin. Superimposed development may be effected using two or more of the above developers. Resin (a) may be polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, vinylchloride/ vinyl acetate copolymer, polyhydroxy methacrylate or polyvinylpyrrolidone. Resin (b) may be cellulose acetate, ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate butyrate or cellulose acetate phthalate. Resin (c) may be polystyrene, polyvinyl acetate or polymethacrylic acid ester. The more polar compound may be phthalic, benzoic, nitrobenzoic, chlorobenzoic, oxybenzoic, salicylic, toluylic, naphthoic, anthranilic, anisic or picric acid or nitrophenol, naphthol, chlorophenol, oxyacetophenone, resorcin, hydroquinone or oxybenzophenone.
