Abstract

1378421 Making heat-exchange pressure vessels; working at specified temperatures; fluid inflation; welding by fusion BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 16 Jan 1973 [18 Jan 1972] 2274/72 Headings B3A B3Q B3V and B3R A hollow article is formed by heating an envelope of a superplastic alloy to within the superplasticity range and inflating the envelope, the envelope being formed by metallurgically bonding together peripheral regions of two flat sheets. A spherical pressure vessel, which may have a heat exchange duct 8 on its outer surface, is formed from alloy sheet containing 90% Ti, 6% Al and 4% V. Superposed sheets are diffusion bonded or electron-beam welded at their periphery, Fig. 4 (not shown), and at the same time strips 8 of the alloy are attached to the envelope along their edges. The envelope is now heated in an oven to 930-950‹ C. and the envelope and ducts beneath the strips 8 are inflated with inert gas at 50 p.s.i., increasing to 150 or 200 p.s.i. The expanded seam, Fig. 5 (not shown), may be reinforced by further welding. Local restrictions on expansion may be applied by a mould, and the article produced need not be spherical.
