Abstract
1378384 Coating carbon articles BRITISH STEEL CORP 20 Oct 1972. [22 Oct 1971] 49261/71 Headings B2E and B2L A protective coating is applied to the surface of a carbon article in a single operation by spraying aluminium in molten state on to the surface and immediately spraying a refractory material on to the aluminium coating so formed. The two materials may be applied from spray heads located alongside each other and moved relatively to the carbon surface, the distance apart of the spray heads being sufficient to ensure that there is no interference with the two sprays and that heat from the molten aluminium does not dry out the refractory material before it reaches the surface of the carbon article. Preferably the refractory spray is a pneumatic spray and a thickening agent such as sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is preferably present in the refractory coating composition. A typical refractory material comprises aluminium powder, titanium dioxide, silicon metal powder, silicon carbide, boric acid, ferrochrome, bichromium trioxide and a zirconium silicate. In an apparatus described the carbon electrode 10 to be sprayed is supported in a lathe and grooves 12 are formed on the electrode in a preparing process. After spraying, the aluminium and refractory may be fused by electric arc and a further applicator made. After fusing again an appliction of aluminium and graphite may be applied. The electrode surface is then sprayed with aluminium by an electric arc process in which aluminium rods 13 are fed into the gap 14 between the arc electrodes 15 and atomised, the. aluminium being blown by air jet 16 on to the carbon electrodes surface. The refractory is delivered through spray 17. During spraying the electrode is slowly rotated and a band of aluminium about one inch wide is sprayed to form a continuous spiral coating of aluminium on the electrode surface. The distances both vertical and horizontal separating the two sprays are variable and dependent upon the rate at which the spray operates. The aluminium spray and refractory spray heads are mounted on a carriage 20 supported on a rail 21 and by a wheel 22 running in another rail 23. The carriage is traversed automatically by a lead screw 24. The refractory spray is provided with a pneumatic spray gun having heads 17 and pipes 18 for the supply of air and 19 for the supply of refractory.
