1378251 Measuring r.m.s. values WESTON INSTRUMENTS Inc 12 Jan 1972 [15 Jan 1971] 1362/72 Heading G1U The r.m.s. value of an input signal I, applied to a'terminal 22, is evaluated by an automatic balancing loop in which the difference I-If, where If is a feedback signal, and the sum I + If, are applied respectively from two summing junctions 28, 30 via amplifiers 18, 20, to the two inputs 21, 23 of a multiplier 12, and the output of the multiplier, which will equal I<SP>2</SP> - If<SP>2</SP>, is integrated 14, to produce the feedback signal If, which signal is also available as an output signal on a terminal 56. In the equilibrium condition, the output of the integrator will be static and therefore the integral of the input then applied to it will be zero. That is, (I<SP>2</SP>-If<SP>2</SP>) dt=0, and therefore, since If is constant, If is the r.m.s. value of the input I. (For Figure see next page)
