Abstract
1429929 Measuring rms values SOLARTRON ELECTRONIC GROUP Ltd 18 June 1973 [21 June 1972] 29006/72 Heading G1U A circuit for measuring the true r.m.s. value of an unknown waveform 10, Fig. 1 includes two thermal converters 22, 36, arranged in two loops: in the first loop both the unknown signal and a D.C. signal VD are applied to the heater of the first thermal converter 22 and its output voltage is compared with a reference voltage VR to adjust the signal VD so that the temperature of the heater is maintained substantially constant; and in the second loop both the signal VD and an A.C. signal from a source 38 are applied to the heater of the second thermal converter 36, and its output voltage minus the output voltage (which should be substantially constant equal to VR) of the first converter 22 is used to control the source 38 of the A.C. signal. Thus, providing the form of the A.C. signal is maintained constant - for example by using, as described, filters to produce a pure sine wave - by rectifying the A.C. signal, a D.C. output signal is obtained which represents the r.m.s value of the unknown input signal. A passive thermal converter using for example temperature sensitive resistors could be used, and the signal VD could be A.C. rather than D.C. in which case the A.C. signal from device 38 could be replaced by a D.C. signal.
