Abstract

1378248 Horns MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC WORKS Ltd 14 April 1972 [31 May 1971] 17315/72 Heading H4X A device for transmitting and receiving ultrasonic energy is of two part construction each part comprising a horn having an ultrasonic transducer element disposed in the throat and a reflector at the outer opening inclined at about 45 degrees with respect to the horn axis. A combined transmit-receive device 27 for ultrasonic waves comprises a mounting base 1 having two L-shaped end brackets 4, 4<SP>1</SP> into the holes 5, 5<SP>1</SP> of which are fitted end stubs 10, 10<SP>1</SP> of a frame 8. A semicylindrical lid 13 covered with felt 12 closes a rear opening 11 of the frame 8. The frame 8 has a pair of openings 9, 9<SP>1</SP> shielded form one another by plates 14. A sound transmitter 15 comprises an ultrasonic piezoelectric element 20 at the throat 16 of a horn 18. Ultrasonic waves, preferably at the resonance frequency of the element 20, are propagated from the throat 16 along the axis of the horn 18 and are reflected by a reflector 19 at right angles to the horn axis. A sound receiver 21 has a reflector 25 at the opening of a horn 24. The horn throat 22 accomodates a piezoelectric element 26, identical with element 20. In use, ultrasonic waves generated by the element 20 are reflected by the reflector 19 through an opening 9 in the frame 8. Ultrasonic waves reflected from some object to be detected and returning through the opening 9<SP>1</SP> are reflected by the reflector 25 and received by the piezoelectric element 26. The transmit-receive device 27 is rotatable about the stubs 10, 10<SP>1</SP>. Bent tabs 28, 28<SP>1</SP> prevent free rotation. A cover 29 has a metal screen 32 fitting over an opening 30 which confronts the openings 9, 9<SP>1</SP>. A decorative plate 33 fits over the outside of the cover frame 31. The ultrasonic signals received by the piezoelectric element 26 are converted into electric signals which may operate a switch (not shown).
