Abstract
1377789 Making heat-exchanger panels TRANTER MFG Inc 27 Oct 1972 49580/72 Heading B3A [Also in Division F4] A hollow-plate heat exchange element 10 comprises a pair of similar plates (e.g. of steel) disposed face-to-face and seamed together at their marginal edges 18, 19 the plates also being secured together at intermediate points by spotwelds 25 in a pattern of parallel rows of the spotwelds with the welds of adjacent rows relatively staggered so that when the plate assembly is expanded by applying an internal fluid pressure, interconnected fluid spaces of pillow-like transverse shape are formed within the element as shown in Fig. 4. The element as shown, is further subdivided by longitudinal welds 21, 22, 23 to provide an internal flow path of generally serpentine form extending between fluid inlet and outlet connections 12, 13 respectively, which are attached to the plate assembly before expansion. 14 are handling grip elements welded to the plate assembly. In the method described for making the element the connections 12, 13 comprise subassemblies which are welded to the plate assembly before expansion, at cut-away portions (27, Figs. 2 and 6). The completed assembly is finally expanded by hydraulic pressure (e.g. at 750 p.s.i.) in a fixture.
