Abstract

1377620 Matrix displays AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 25 Nov 1971 [12 Jan 1971 3 June 1971] 54872/71 Heading G5C [Also in Division G3] An electronic timepiece comprises a timebase oscillator, a divider and driving circuit, and a display using persistent electrochromic material. Application of current of one polarity to a display element produces a bleached state while the opposite polarity produces a coloured state. Each state is persistent so that continuous energization is not required. The display may be of digital form using bar or dot matrices. A display element typically comprises a support 2 of glass having a conductive film thereon, a vacuum deposited electrochromic layer 1, e.g. of tungsten oxide, an electrolyte and separator layer 3, e.g. of sulphuric acid, and a counter electrode 4. The counter electrode may be of gold or of the same material as the layer 1. A number of other materials for the electrolyte and counter electrode are suggested. The display may be integrated with a watch glass as at 29a, Fig. 9, and may use transmitted rather than reflected light. The electrolyte must then be transparent and a light source 30 is provided in the display unit; the counter electrodes 31, Fig. 13, are arranged in the same plane as the display bars 32. A display device (37, Fig. 15, not shown) may be positioned in an encapsulating plastics watch case (38) in front of a battery (35), the electronics being in a block (36) behind the battery. Plug connectors may be provided between the parts.
