Abstract
1377544 Thermionic cathodes PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 Feb 1972 [13 Feb 1971] 6264/72 Heading H1D A thermionic cathode comprises an elongate conductor 1 having a cavity 2 in its surface so that a heating current produces maximum heating adjacent the cavity the surface of which constitutes the emissive area. The cathode is a W, Ti, or LaB 6 wire of circular or rectangular cross-section with a circular or elliptical reentrant cavity. Local heating is increased since the cavity radiates less heat than plane surfaces or the wire. With use the cavity increases hence the heating current may be reduced. The cathode is used in electron beam apparatus mounted by ceramic supports in a grid cylinder with the cavity adjacent a non symmetrical aperture in an end plate of the cylinder. The cavity may be formed by spark erosion, electron beam machining or photographic etching through the aperture.
