Abstract

1376753 Blow-moulding articles with undercuts WORSON SA 24 Jan 1972 [29 Jan 1971] 3267/72 Heading B5A Apparatus for producing a hollow body having an undercut formed by an indented circumferential wall comprises an injection mould and a blow-mould opening towards each other, the blow-mould comprising a one-piece main body portion, a base portion defining the end opposite the opening, and a plural-part auxiliary body forming the undercut portion, the parts of the auxiliary body radially movable together to define the undercut and apart so as to remove the hollow body from the mould and a rotatable core member carrying two oppositely extending mould cores located between the injection and blow-mould cavities so that, in one position thereof, it is displaceable relatively to the injection mould to insert a core into the injection mould and subsequently withdraw it therefrom with the injection moulded preform and, in the other position thereof, it is displaceable relatively to the blow-mould to insert the core and preform into the blow-mould and subsequently withdraw the core and blow-moulded article therefrom. As shown in Fig. 1, a preform 7 is formed on core 3a in injection mould 2 by injection means 1. After axially withdrawing the core 3a and preform 7, core plate 3 is rotated by 180 degrees and hollow mould 4 advanced thereon by means of mould plate 5. After blow-moulding, e.g. through core 3a with or without vacuum assistance, mould 4 is withdrawn by plate 5, auxiliary mould parts 4b opened and the moulded hollow body 6 ejected by members 8 or by compressed air. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the undercut portion is at the narrowest portion of the article, mould plate (15) being separated, from the main body of mould (14) before ejection of the article. The auxiliary mould body may be in two parts (Fig. 3, not shown), or multipart, e.g. eight (Fig. 4, not shown). The moulds may be multi-cavity, the plate 3 having a plurality of cores for co-operation therewith.
