Abstract

1376454 Making boxes AIRFIX INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 Dec 1972 [14 Dec 1971] 58080/71 Heading B5D To enable blanks used to form boxes to be positioned close together on the blank stackwhich may be flexible board, paper, plastics or metal foil-without wastage each box is formed of two or more blanks the abutting edges of which are connected, preferably by injection moulding. The blanks may be frusto-conical as shown in Fig. 2 or rectangular if the box is to be rectangular. A base may be formed of overlapping flaps secured together by injection moulding or the base may be formed by injection moulding. Apparatus for assembling the blanks comprises stacks of blanks 14, 15, and arms 22, 23 having suction pads 24 and swingable by the action of a jack 27 to remove blanks from the stacks and present them to the cavity of a tool 21. Actuation of a further jack 20 moves the blanks and arms 22, 23 into the cavity with the blank edges abutting. Vacuum ports may be provided in the walls of the cavity. The cavity tool is then closed by a core tool that injects material to form the seams, and if required the base. There may be two cavity tools mounted on rails so that they can be moved into and out of the moulding machine, one tool being loaded with blanks whilst the seams are being moulded in the other tool. When the blanks include base forming flaps an additional member (30, Fig. 7) having a suction cap is provided on the arms 22, 23.
