Abstract

1376426 Overheated wheel detector SERVO CORP OF AMERICA 8 May 1973 [22 June 1972] 21911/73 Heading B7N In a trackside detector arrangement for detecting overheated train wheels produced, e.g. by dragging brakes, a radiation detector is disposed in a scanner 12 which is sighted to receive radiation from a zone on each passing wheel 16 defined by the top of the track 14 and a line parallel to the track and running through the bottom of the brake 18. Preferably the wheel is scanned 3" above the track level. The scanner is also disposed at an angle of 65 degrees to the line of the track so that both near wheels 16a, 16b and far wheels 16c, 16d can be scanned from one side of the track. When level alarm 34 detects an output from amplifier 30 above a set level, latch 40 is operated to gate wheel counter pulses from units 36, 38 to telemetry equipment from which they are transmitted to a control station. From the total received count the overheated wheel position is determined.
