Abstract
1376244 Fast-curing concrete panels U S TERRAZZO PANELS Inc 12 Jan 1972 [14 Jan 1971] 1356/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division C1] Concrete articles such as terrazzo panels are made by compressing in a mould a mixture comprising 20-25% by weight of hydraulic cement, 60-75% by weight of aggregate, 1-2% by weight of a vinyl acetate-dibutyl maleate copolymer and 5-10% by weight of water. The compressed mixture is removed from the mould and then cured in an atmosphere of CO 2 gas so that it undergoes an exothermic temperature rise of at least 20‹ F. in less than 5 minutes. Portland cement is used with aggregates of sand, gravel, marble or granite dust or chips, crushed limestone, quartz crystal dust, seashells, broken and coloured glass, and crushed concrete, mortar or bricks. The aggregate has mixed fine and coarse particles to give less than 1-4% volume of voids. The water includes dies or pigments. The vinyl acetatedibutyl maleate copolymer comprises 77% by weight of vinyl acetate and 23% by weight of dibutyl maleate in an emulsion form with polyvinyl alcohol as the colloid. As described, the dry components are mixed, sprayed with a mixture of copolymer and water, and blended in a double screw blender 10. The mixture is screwfed to a high pressure hydraulic press 14, fed into a mould 18, and compressed at more than 1 million 1b./sq. yd. to form a panel. The panel 22 is ejected by a plunger 20 on to an open mesh conveyer 30, and led into a CO 2 chamber having flexible seals 26, 28. The CO 2 pressure is 1-80 p.s.i.g., and the chamber height 1¢-4 times the thickness of the panel. After about 10 minutes, the cured panel 22 is ground and polished using diamond wheels and a water coolant. Several examples are described.
