Abstract

1375910 Apparatus for opening bags REED INTERNATIONAL Ltd 13 June 1973 [15 March 1972] 12078/72 Heading B8C Apparatus for opening the mouth of a sack or bag formed of non-woven material comprises a pair of suction devices 2, 3 arranged to be applied to opposite sides of a sack or bag S at or adjacent its mouth and both movable to open the mouth by drawing the opposite sides apart, and spreader means 9 arranged to be automatically inserted in the mouth of the sack or bag S when the latter has been opened sufficiently by the suction devices 2, 3 and thereafter to move in concert with the suction devices to assist in opening the mouth of the sack or bag the spreader means being freely mounted for spreading movement. As shown, the suction devices comprise pairs of suction cups 5-7 mounted on a flexible plate 8 and movable by jacks 4. The spreader means 9 comprises a pair of plates mounted on arms 10 fixed to shaft 11 which are slidable on plates 13 pivotably supported at 14, 14 on a frame 1, the arrangement being such that as the pairs of suction cups 5-7 are moved apart by the jacks 4, abutments 16 engage members 17 on the arms 10 to swing the plates 13 outwardly as the shafts are moved downwardly by jacks 15 and the spreader plates enter the mouth of the bag S. A filling spout 18 is moved into the open mouth of the bag by a control arm 19 and a pivoted arm 21 senses the presence of the bag at the spout 18. The apparatus may form part of a bag filling and sealing apparatus according to Specification 1,224,317.
