Abstract

1375278 Automatic current control METABOWERKE KG CLOSS RAUCH & SCHNIZLER 4 Dec 1972 [21 Jan 1972] 55864/72 Heading G3R [Also in Division H2] The spindle of an electric tool is driven by a series-wound motor through gearing which is selected to limit the no-load rotation speed of the spindle to a safe value if an electronic speed regulator should fail. As shown, a series motor 2 in an angle grinder has field windings 16, 21 armature 20 and may be supplied from A.C. mains over a main switch 13 and anti-parallel rectifiers 19,43. Rectifier 43 is phasecontrolled by a uni-junction transistor 41 biased by an RC circuit comprising a capacitor 42, resistor 49 and transistors 29, 40. In use, switch 13 is closed and the motor is initially supplied over resistors 17, 18 and rectifier 19. A capacitor 28 charges so that transistor 29 turns on, allowing the UJT 41 to trigger the SCR 43 on alternate halfcycles. After a pre-set delay, a switch 34 closes, placing a primary winding 35 of a current transformer in series with rectifier 19, and shorting resistors 17, 18 so that capacitor 28 discharges. The triggering of SCR 43 is now controlled by the current developed in secondary winding 36 which biases transistor 40 to vary the breakdown time of UJT 41. Increasing load on the grinder increases the motor current, causing increased power to be applied to the windings, so that the motor speed and current are stabilized. A speed step-down ratio of 3À5 between the motor shaft and tool spindle is said to limit the no-load speed to a safe value if the control circuit should fail.
